Mission Statement
The Jazz Arts Foundation, Inc. is a corporation whose avowed mission is to "enhance the awareness of Jazz as a performing art". Since its founding in 1989, the JAF has committed itself to the purpose of educating the public about Jazz Arts through the promotion of awareness and sensitivity to Jazz, and to upgrade it as an art form to the level of community acceptance and support equal to that given other performing arts.

The Jazz Arts Foundation, Inc., a local non-profit group, is funded primarily by memberships and tax deductible donations.  We do not receive any funding on a regular, annual basis from third parties.  Please consider helping us accomplish our mission of promoting jazz by joining JAF or making a donation in any amount.

Cooper Harbert 2008 DM Scholar

2008 Annual Duke Madison Memorial Scholarship Recipient Named

The Jazz Arts Foundation is very pleased to announce that the 2008 Duke Madison Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to George Rogers Clark High School Junior, Cooper Harbert, a drummer in the CKYO Jazz Arts Orchestra. The scholarship will cover tuition along with room and board, to the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop in Louisville. Cooper will attend the Workshop in July and will provide an article about his experience to be included in a future issue of our newsletter, the JAM SESSION.

The Jazz Arts Foundation initiated the scholarship in June, 1992 as a way to honor one of Lexington's jazz ambassadors, saxophonist Duke Madison, after his passing. The scholarship has been presented nearly every year to a deserving member of the JAF Youth Ensemble, which is now the CKYO JAO. Click HERE for the full press release.

The JAM SESSION to be distributed via email notification
The JAF Board of Directors voted at the March board meeting to discontinue publishing the quarterly JAM SESSION newsletter in printed form. Instead, the JAM SESSION will now be created in PDF format and emailed all current members. This means that the newsletter can be published more often and at a much reduced cost to JAF. In addition, it means that your membership fee is now fully tax deductible. So, please take advantage of this and join or renew NOW. The newsletter, in it's new format, will be mailed to all current JAF members by the end of May, 2008. If you are a current JAF member, please send a note with the email address you prefer JAF to use to jaf_sec@qx.net as soon as possible. Thank you.

Immediate Opportunity Available for your personal involvement
Currently there are openings on our Board of Directors for several enthusiastic people who would like to make a direct impact on the future of jazz in Kentucky. Won't you please consider providing us with your expertise, time and energy to benefit our jazz community? The minimum requirements to be a board member are that you must be a current member of JAF in good standing and be willing to attend at least 9 of the 12 monthly meetings held the 1st Wednesday of each month from 7 - 8 PM. (Go to the About JAF page on this site for 2008 meeting places.) We are an all-volunteer "working" board, so you will be expected to serve on at least one committee for various projects throughout the year; but the time you spend will usually be minimal. And, you don't necessarily need to be a jazz fan to be on the board - we need men and women from all walks of life and with every skill.

2008 - 2009 OFFICERS ELECTED
The Jazz Arts Foundation elected new board members and officers at the April 2008 board meeting.  Check the About JAF page for the complete list of 2008 - 2009 board of directors and officers. If you are interested in being on the board, be sure to notify a current board member immediately.  We encourage all who are interested to please volunteer your services - you are needed to help our organization grow.

For more information, answers to questions, and/or to volunteer, please contact Dave McWhorter, JAF President, by phone at (859) 273-5193 or Email.  You can also always contact the webmaster.
